Stents and smoking

22-07-2006

Poland boasts having a relatively up-to-date and well functioning emergency cardiology system. Thousand of lives have been saved by performing coronary angioplasty and direct stenting in acute coronary incidents but surprisingly smoking cessation is not seen as a priority. I see that patients who have been successfully treated  are not followed up - they either keep on smoking or return to smoking because they "feel well again".

Well, this is obviously not cost-effective but the Polish healthcare system is infamous for being wasteful and badly managed.

Doctor’s pay

16-03-2006

According to one of the most respected Polish medical websites Medycyna Praktyczna, more than 50% of doctors in Poland earn less than 1200 Polish zloties a month (approx. 373 US dollars)1 . On top of that monthly remuneration of more than 70% of Polish doctors is less than 1500 Polish zloties (approx. 467 US dollars)2.

Comments? We, in Poland, are hopeless and no wonder only 10% of young Polish doctors intend to work in Poland. Without any real prospects to provide for their families they are emigrating in large numbers3, mainly to Denmark, Sweden, Germany and the UK.
